What Was My Mistake?

I was in class 7.(7.A). Our class teacher was Leena. She was taking English for us. My favourite subject. And she was my Favourite teacher (She Was!). Once she had come to my home, while going to another teacher's house.
Usually she takes a lesson, then she gives us questions and answers and asks us to study and come on the next day or so. Next day, she will ask the questions and we have to answer those. If we don’t answer the questions we have to receive beatings in hand with cane. Usually the number of beatings vary.

That day also she had asked us to study a lesson’s questions and answers. I had studied them very well. I was confident. I came to the class. I was sitting with Nithil, Shajeeb and Sakeer Hussain. I came to class in the morning. We all recited the questions. First period was English. All where busy studying the questions. We were in the 2nd column, 1st bench. We came back to class after assembly. We again started to recite the queations. She came and the class started.

She said ‘I am going to ask questions and nobody should open the book once I start asking the questions. Is that clear?’

And she started asking the questions. Mean while I had kept my pencil inside the book. She had started from the 1st column. Probably she will be coming to our bench at last. Some of my friends were tensed. But as I had studied well, I didn’t have any worries. She had finished asking questions to the students in the 1st column and has started the 2nd column from the last bench.4-5 students were standing, as they couldn’t answer the questions. I was simply sitting and waiting for my turn. I noticed my pencil inside my note and took it out. Suddenly Leena Teacher came to me and asked a question. It was not my turn. I was little surprised. Anyway I answered the question. After that she went back to the last student to whom she was asking questions. She didn’t ask me to sit. I thought she had forgot about it. As it is not polite to sit, without her permission, I stood there itself. My bench mates were also surprised by the sudden behavior of our teacher.

She came to our bench. It was my turn again. She asked me another question again. I answered that too, very fluently. Still she didn’t ask me to sit. This time I realized, there is some problem. And that session of questioning finished. Now there were about 9 students, including me, standing. She started to ask questions again to those who were standing. Those who can answer this time can sit and escape from punishment. She came to me. She asked another question. This time also I answered. For my surprise (probably to the surprise of all of us) she asked me another question. I answered that too. Still she didn’t tell me to sit. She went to the table and took the cane. Now 5 of us were standing.

She started to give punishment to others who were standing. One hit with the cane on his\her palm. And finally she came to me. She asked me to show my palm. Now I was really surprised and very sad. Why should I get the punishment? I have answered all her questions? Now that hurt a lot. This was the first time I’m getting punishment in her class. I have never given her a chance to punish me. She hit me, not once but thrice. When hitting me, she said ‘Anyone can answer to my question by looking into note. I saw you peeping into the notebook’.

So that was my mistake. She was not my favorite teacher anymore. And I have never answered any questions she asked in her class, even though I knew the answers.

It was an excellent presentation of childhood memories and the way you penned your reasoning will simply leave the teacher stunned and her eyes filled with tears if she ever peeps into your blog some time.
